This university remained unique in southern Italy for seven centuries.<\/p>\n<p>After the defeat of Frederic&#8217;s son, <strong>Manfred<\/strong>, in Naples in 1266, the kingdom of Sicily was entrusted by Pope Clement IV to <strong>Charles of Anjou<\/strong>, who transferred the capital from Palermo to Naples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Armoiries_Anjou_J\u00e9rusalem.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-926\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Armoiries_Anjou_J\u00e9rusalem.png\" alt=\"Armoiries_Anjou_J\u00e9rusalem\" width=\"150\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Armoiries_Anjou_J\u00e9rusalem.png 150w, https:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Armoiries_Anjou_J\u00e9rusalem-134x150.png 134w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>He made the New Castle (<strong>Castel Nuovo<\/strong>) his residence around which the construction of the palaces of the nobles formed a new district.<br \/>\nDuring his reign new Gothic churches were built, including Santa Chiara, San Lorenzo Maggiore, Santa Maria Donna Regina and the Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/photos\/napoli\/images\/naples_charles_danjou_5050.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/photos\/napoli\/images\/naples_charles_danjou_5050.jpg\" alt=\"Roger II le normand\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1284<\/strong>, following the revolt of the <strong>Sicilian Vespers<\/strong>, the Angevins lost the insular part to the advantage of the <strong>Aragonese<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When they were unified, the two Kingdoms were called &#8220;Sicily&#8221;. On the mainland we began to distinguish &#8220;Sicily before the Lighthouse&#8221; (Naples) and &#8220;Sicily beyond the Lighthouse&#8221;, with regard to the lighthouse of Messina; or, &#8220;Kingdom of Naples&#8221; for the mainland.<br \/>\nThe two siciles remained formally separated until 1816, when under one entity they formed the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.<\/p>\n<p>The kingdom was divided into two halves, but Naples developed considerably; The merchants of Pisa and Genoa were joined by the Tuscan bankers, then by exceptional artists such as Boccaccio, Petrarch and Giotto.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frederic II Hohenstaufen founded the university in 1224, considering Naples as intellectual capital while Palermo held a political role.
