{"id":4245,"date":"2018-03-26T11:49:41","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T10:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/?p=4245"},"modified":"2018-03-26T11:49:41","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T10:49:41","slug":"naples-and-ancient-rome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/en\/naples-and-ancient-rome\/","title":{"rendered":"Naples and ancient Rome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <strong>476<\/strong>, <strong>Romulus Augustus<\/strong>, the last of the Roman emperors, was deposed and imprisoned near the Castel dell &#8216;Ovo (castle of the egg) which at that time was a fortified Roman villa.<\/p>\n<p>Many Roman emperors &#8211; Claudius, Tiberius, Nero &#8211; spent their holidays in Naples in elegant villas, of which only ruins remain today.<\/p>\n<p>Among the Roman constructions there was an odeon and a theater, as well as the temple of Dioscuri, the god of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Although conquered by the Romans in the 4th century BC, Naples has long maintained its Greek culture.<br \/>\nDuring the Roman era the city was a place where Hellenistic culture flourished, attracting many Romans curious about Greek culture.<br \/>\nNaples was famous for its pleasant climate, sung by the poems of <strong>Virgil<\/strong>. Luxurious villas stretched all along the coast, from the Gulf of Pozzuoli to the Sorrentine Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>The Romans connected the city to the rest of Italy thanks to their famous ways, they dug tunnels to connect Naples to Pozzuoli, enlarged the harbor, baths and public aqueducts.<br \/>\nIn fact, the quality of life in Naples has increased considerably. In addition, the culinary preparations already had good reputation.<br \/>\nThe testimonies of that time truly describe Naples as a city of pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>According to the legend, <strong>Peter<\/strong> and <strong>Paul<\/strong> themselves came to preach in the city.<br \/>\nChristian influence began in the last years of the Roman Empire. Some catacombs were dug in the north of Naples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/photos\/san-gennaro.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/photos\/san-gennaro-naples.jpg\" alt=\"san gennaro\" width=\"150\" height=\"241\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"10\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first Paleo-Christian basilicas were built near the entrances to the catacombs.
