The merchant colony founded on the islet was called <strong>Parthenope<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Around the 8th century BC, people from the Greek colony of <strong>Cumae<\/strong>\u00a0immigrated tothe hamlet of Pizzofalcone and around .<\/p>\n<p>In 680 BC, Partenope was already a thriving city that aroused the envy of the people of Cumae. They destroyed the colony.<br \/>\nA few years later, settlers from Euboea, who were fleeing a terrible epidemic, reconcepted Partenope.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/cartes\/naples-antique.jpg\" alt=\"naples antique\" width=\"412\" height=\"235\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"10\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>475 BC<\/strong>, other settlers from Cumae founded a town at the east of the old Partenope and close to it; for this reason it was called &#8220;ne\u00e1 P\u00f3lis&#8221; (New Town).<\/p>\n<p>Around <strong>400 BC<\/strong>, the walls of Neapolis (Naples) resist the siege of the Samnites who had conquered the territories of Cumae from the &#8220;Capo Miseno&#8221; to even Cumae until to the port of Dicearchia (now Pozzuoli).<\/p>\n<p>At that time, the enclosure was powerful. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/photos\/colonne-corinthienne-sanpaolomaggiore.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naples-napoli.org\/photos\/colonne-corinthienne-sanpaolomaggiore-naples.jpg\" alt=\"colonne corinthienne \u00e0 naples\" width=\"250\" height=\"233\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"10\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So powerful that when Naples allied with the Romans, the Phoenician invader <strong>Hannibal<\/strong> had to retreat in front of its walls.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of <strong>Rome<\/strong>, the city had become an important commercial and agricultural center.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>326 BC<\/strong>, following the <strong>Samnite<\/strong> wars, the Roman consul Quinto Publilio Filone entered Naples and made it a Roman colony.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first settlers were Greek sailors from the island of Rhodes.
