The oldest remains of the city are tombs, northwest and northeast of the city, and the sanctuary of Hera<\/strong>, a few kilometers north, at the mouth of the Sele river.<\/p>\n

The central districts were from the beginning dedicated to different public uses, including two sacred areas to the north and south, separated by the agora<\/strong>, the southernmost part of which became the forum<\/strong> in Roman times.<\/p>\n

The major remains are those of the three main Doric temples, which date back to the first half of the sixth century BC. They were dedicated to Hera<\/strong> and Poseidon<\/strong>, although since the 18th, they were long mistakenly named as: a basilica and the temples of Neptune and Ceres.<\/p>\n

Paestum covers about 120 hectares, of which only 25 have been excavated. Its walls that still stand, are 4750 meters long, 5 to 7 meters thick, and 15 meters high. It remains 24 of its 28 laps.<\/p>\n
